Practice area · Motor vehicle accidents

Motor vehicle accident case management for everything the crash set in motion.

One crash can mean an at-fault carrier, your client's own coverage, a car in the shop, missed paychecks, and a health plan waiting to be repaid. Legasus keeps all of it in one matter, so nobody is guessing which adjuster has which claim number.

Example intake for Johnson v. Midwest Logistics, a Commercial Vehicle Crash on March 3, 2026 at 7:42 AM at Hempstead Turnpike and Wantagh Avenue in Levittown, Nassau County. County police and fire rescue responded, a traffic report was taken with report number MV-2026-0304117, 14 photos were uploaded, and it was raining. A crash diagram shows a truck, Unit 1, and the client's car, Unit 2, meeting in the intersection.

01At the scene

The first week decides a lot. Intake writes it down.

Who saw it, who came, whether a report was taken, what the road was like. Intake asks while memories are fresh, then asks the follow-ups that fit the kind of crash.

Crash injury types in a Legasus Personal Injury matter, and the follow-up questions each adds to intake.
1Motor Vehicle Crash
  • If rear-ended, did you have a hitch on your vehicle?
2Commercial Vehicle Crash

3Motorcycle Crash
  • Type of Motorcycle
  • Brand of Motorcycle
4Bicycle Crash
  • Type of Bicycle
  • Ambulance Information
  • Any tickets issued, and what was issued?
5Pedestrian Incident

No extra questions. The shared crash fields cover it.

Asked on every crash

  • Date and time of incident
  • Street, city, and county
  • What happened
  • Who else was present or saw it
  • Agencies that responded
  • Ambulance transport
  • Injuries sustained
  • Traffic accident report and Report Number
  • Photos, with notes
  • Weather conditions

All five run as a Personal Injury matter, with the same statute clock, treating providers, and liens. See personal injury in Legasus

02Coverage

Every policy the crash touched, kept apart.

Each policy gets its own entry, with its own insurer, limits, and up to three adjusters. The back-and-forth is written down on the policy it belongs to, so a no-fault call never gets mixed up with the liability negotiation.

Record every check by type, with its date and amount. The matter adds them up, takes the fee at your percentage, and shows what reaches the client.

03The car

The car is a claim of its own.

Where it was hit, who is fixing it, who paid for the rental, and what it's worth now. Property damage has its own tab, its own adjuster, and its own check.

Lost wages sit next door

The weeks your client couldn't drive to work have their own tab on the same matter, beside the car and the medical picture.

04Fault

When fault is argued, the file is already in order.

In a truck crash, the driver is rarely the only defendant. Name up to four, each with their own counsel, and keep witnesses and experts on the matter. When you want a second read, the Legasus Assistant can work from the crash report you attach.

For car, truck, and motorcycle crash matters, the Panel analysis adds a motor vehicle review for the attorney: who owned the vehicle, whether the driver was working, the crash report and citations, and UM/UIM coverage. It labels what the record shows versus what it infers.

05FAQ

Motor vehicle cases in Legasus, answered.

What the software does for a crash case today, and where it stops.

What kinds of motor vehicle accident cases does Legasus handle?

Car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian cases. Each runs as a Personal Injury matter with one of five crash injury types: Motor Vehicle Crash, Commercial Vehicle Crash, Motorcycle Crash, Bicycle Crash, or Pedestrian Incident. The type decides the follow-up questions on intake: a hitch question for car and truck crashes, the motorcycle's type and brand, and the bicycle's type, ambulance information, and any tickets issued.

Can one matter hold several insurance policies?

Yes. Add as many insurance entries as the crash needs, each with its Insurance Type (such as Liability At-Fault, No-Fault, or Health Insurance), insurer, policy and claim numbers, policy limit, MedPay coverage, and up to three adjusters. Each entry keeps its own list of demands by the firm and offers by the insurance company.

Does Legasus track property damage and rental cars?

Yes. The Property Damage tab records the vehicle and its owner, VIN, where it was hit, repair status and shop, the property damage adjuster, rental status and who paid for it, loss of use, the initial estimate, diminished value, the final amount, and who received the check. Lost wages have their own tab on the same matter.

Can we name both the driver and the trucking company as defendants?

Yes. The Litigation tab holds up to four defendants and three plaintiffs, each defendant with their own counsel, attorney, and paralegal. It even suggests the usual pattern for a multiple-defendant motor vehicle case: Defendant 1 is the driver, Defendant 2 is the entity.

Can Legasus read the police report?

Not into fields. Intake records whether the client has the traffic accident report and its report number, and you attach the report to the matter. From there, the Legasus Assistant can write a liability memo from the attached report and witness statements, quoting the page for each point, for an attorney to review. It does not fill intake fields from the report on its own.

How is the statute of limitations set for a crash case?

The same way as any Personal Injury matter. Each matter has an SOL Due date, and when you convert a lead Legasus can compute it from the incident date using a state rule. Rules for Illinois, California, New York, Texas, and Florida come preloaded and your firm can add its own. Rules are set by practice area and state, not by crash type, and an attorney should verify the date.

How are settlements from different policies recorded?

Each check is its own settlement with a type (Liability, MedPay, UM/UIM, PIP, or Other), date, amount, and case costs. The matter totals them, calculates attorney fees from your Total Fee Percentage, and shows the total client recovery.

Is this separate from the personal injury workflow?

No. A motor vehicle case is a Personal Injury matter with a crash injury type, so it has everything a PI matter has: the statute clock, treating providers, liens, insurance, property damage, litigation, and settlements, in one file.
